Lol at all these people who keep saying "No new Nintendo console/handheld before 2017-2018". I'm not sure on which planet you guys are living on, but Nintendo hardware sales are at historical lows. And it's only going to go DOWNWARDS from this point moving forward. How can Nintendo even afford to wait another 3 years on 2 systems that are bombing in the west currently? And yes, 3DS is doing very poorly in the west. It's barely going to end up reaching N64 numbers in the US (which is very bad for a Nintendo handheld, it's about HALF of what the WORST SELLING Nintendo handheld sold in the US) and it's doing about equally poorly in Europe for a Nintendo handheld. As for wiiU, I don't even need to explain why it's a bomb worldwide.

If  game cube can survived in 6th gen era, why not with Wii U.  If they releasing a new hardware on 2016 it will be a normal console with just more powerful then PS4 and Xbox One, and they will competing with all 2 giants company that already sit comfortably on the market. They can release a fusion console and tablet but the graphic will be the same with Wii U , if they want to make a tablet more powerful then a Wii U,  the tablet will be to big to carry and consume a lot of battery.

So 2017 or 2018 is a perfect time for them to strike back with casual design system (Tablet ) but powerful enough to compete with both PS brand and Xbox brand on graphic department , so they can gain more support from third party publisher.

Console tablet would be a terrible way to go. It wouldn't be comfortable for long play sessions and it wouldn't be portable at all. If the next handheld is in the size range of the 3DSXL but with the freeform screen (could be the entire top half of the device so great size but with other features) and can be used as a controller for the Console... that would be a feasible solution. Nintendo just needs to do some things to make sure that its powerful enough on its own and they need to work out deals with everyone that offers streaming to include the new HDS.
