How can you possibly not realize that it is reffering to both? It's not disconnecting consumers either. What makes you thing that supporting the next console means immediately halting support for the Wii U? If the Wii U, like they've said, is the start of that architecture, then it's extremely easy to see that the homogenisation done on the next handheld and console will also include the Wii U. In the same way that the next handheld will downscale the next console's games, the Wii U will most likely still be able to play most of those new console games, but with downgrades. In other words, if you own a Wii U, you'd be in no rush to upgrade, and if you're Nintendo, you won't be losing money on those people not upgrading yet because they'll still be buying the new games. You know, just like with the newest iphones that Nintendo is basing this whole model on...

The Wii U selling like shit wouldn't be as much of a problem at all if the people on the Wii could still buy Mario Kart 8 on their Wiis. Get it? Unified playform? Huh?

People will be able to seamlessly transfer their games from the Wii U to it's successor at anytime. I'd be willing to bet anthing that the Wii U will get a major firmware update as soon as the thing is released so that the OS matches the new console in design and functionality. Most of those launch games will be available on the Wii U, but look better and have added functionality on it's successor. People who own a Wii U can wait a little before upgrading, but the majority of gamers who simply don't will have a reason to get the new thing. Not only will it be more powerful and have newer games, but it will have the entire Wii U library they missed. I'm thinking more and more that we won't see a new true 3D Mario until the next console, and that will be it's first true exclusive.

What are you talking about? You completely missed the point. I am referring to "redefining video game platform" definition Iwata discussed earlier this january. This definition is simply about connecting with consumers with NNID's. Which is proven by the link i shared.
