Controls aren't as tight as a typical Mario game, but they're good and more than good enough for the style of gameplay. Gameplay involves things like taping buttons at key moments to get bounced through a collapsing environments with minimal skill of your own. The game doesn't demand the complex maneuvers from you that a Mario game does.
There are mechanically more sophisticated platformers out there but it's best to judge the game on it's own merits and style of gameplay. For the most part I disagree that their is too much trial and error. It's not the hardest game and I felt there were sufficient clues to indicate what they wanted me to do at any given moment for the overwhelming bulk of the game. The odd exception were levels I quite enjoyed. In moderation a little bit of trial and error can be fun.
I like the Murphy levels, but I don't like how they're sprinkled amongst the other levels. I always think, Oh no, when I find I've jumped into one by mistake. What would completely fix the issue for me is off they were all separated off into their own section. As you say Murphy's fun in multiplayer, though I still don't like finding myself in a murphy level. It's great to just have him as an added option you can switch to on the fly.
I've made a lot of the same points as you in the past, when faced with the worship that game gets from some quarters, but I still think it's a really great game on its own merits and many of the issues with the game are relatively minor. I think your review is overly harsh.
