It wasn't going to win. Not because it's a Nintendo-published game, but because it didn't do anything particularly new or exciting besides, from all accounts, being a very well made niche title on a system where its type of game isn't common.
As much as some people want to think of it as something more, it's just not a big deal in the context of the industry as a whole.
