The only games I buy full price and day 1 are games I know I want and almost always they are Nintendo games. I bought Captain Toad on the eshop the instant it was available for purchase. I went digital this time because I wanted Nintendo to get every dollar possible for this game. Otherwise for most of the big publishers I don't buy day 1. Its easier to wait for 2 months and almost always those games are dirt cheap. Nintendo is a rare exception. Their games usually keep their original price months or years after launch.
