Games with multiplayer-focus are usually front-loaded: to get the most fun out of them, you have to play them as long as they are popular (many other players, fast matchmaking...)

Story-driven games with a great single player campaign you can enjoy whenever you want. A successor will have a different story, so it doesn't replace the old game.

Sport games with no story at all are replaced by their successors (unless they fuck up the successor's game mechanic).

So many will buy TLoU on a sale next year or in 2 - 4 years to have the single-player experience, but very few will play Titanfall 1 again when multiplayer fans have moved on to Titanfall 2 (or a similar game with big marketing budget). "Nobody" will buy FIFA 13 in 2015/2016 instead of the new version.
