Well, things worse than eggings would happen except the police usually escort team buses to the rival stadiums. I know for sure the Broncos had to have police escorts in Kansas City. Same happens in Oakland. San Diego loves Denver so much, more than half of their attending fans during Denver-SD games wear Broncos gear, so we get a long with them just fine. 
There is actually a lot of fights, stabbings and shootings involving fans. It is just that the NFL does not go around reporting it on the front page all the time.
