Units sold through would be my guess.  This was at the end of the montage right before Layden came out on stage and said PS4 is the fastest selling console of all time.

We dont know these number until which date. I think it should be until first/second week of november so it will complete 1 year. Sony said fastest selling console of all time, so what was the highest numbers for first year before we can guess PS4 is above that.


Doesn't matter to me what date it's from since it's not a milestone number anyway.   When the PS4 hits 15m sold-through I'm sure Sony will make an official announcement.

They wont, the number shown was definitely since September/October (you can just do a simple math based on Shawn Laydens infographic around destinys launch). The console would probably hit 20m by the end of december/january, its in Dec/Jan NPD where sony would give an official announcement of 20m sold (if they even want to). You cant expect them to be announcing for every million sold, not only would it be tiring but we would start seeing "Sony arrogance" threads and unnecessary gloat articles

 

I'm actually glad they slowed down with sales milestone announcements.  It's gonna hit 20m before the end of the year.  And it will be worthy of an announcement but it isn't absolutely necessary.  We will be able to extrapolate from the next quarterly report at the very least. The only thing that regular official announcements do is tell us how good ioi and his estimations are.
