I was a huge GC controller guy--I even bought a new GC controller despite there being 3 in the house already (one of which was "specifically mine" since you know how us gamers can be about sharing even controllers)--but between the nicer shoulder buttons IMO (for some reason the GC ones got annoying when it came to shielding, maybe due to how much I have to press them down), a slightly more... "modern" feel, the wireless ability + a proper home button and such (so I don't have to grab the GamePad or something when I need to use buttons the GC controller doesn't have), and great battery, I've been using it more and more, it's actually rather nice.
In fact, I sometimes take my GamePad up to my room and bring my Pro Controller and use the GamePad as a screen while I play with the Pro Controller. Since my GC controllers are all wired I can't really use them that way, but my Pro Controller has no problem playing from upstairs despite my Wii U being downstairs. Since it's annoying to constantly switch, I've just been getting used to the Pro Controller. It's different, and I can't really use X/Y for jumping in the same way I did with the GC controller, but I wouldn't say it's bad or impossible to get used to.
And thankfully unlike the GC controller, you don't need expensive/hard-to-find adapters and you can use it for lots of other games, so yeah. I think the choice for most people shouldn't be too hard. =P
