With having to run at a minimum of 75fps times 2 for 3D, it's never going to catch up with 30fps console games. Add that VR needs about dual 6K screens to look comparable to 1080p on tv, which will need higher fps again.
But we don't have to start at that level of graphics. It should be fine running ps2 era games at 2.5K 75fps. The lower complexity will make it easier on the eyes too at the lower perceived resolution. With some optimizations ps3 era games could reach that as well. GT6 ran at 1440x1080 near 60 fps, 2560x1440 at 75fps is about a 3x increase in pixel through put. I would love to play that in VR. Wipeout HD should easily be able to do it as well.
