I've done this with all of my laptops, and after several years the battery has died on each (though who's to say they wouldn't have died regardless?).
There are random occasions where I will want to move my laptop around quickly, and having the battery out is not useful without being hot-swappable. Though the main issue is keeping the laptop alive in case the power is ripped out, which is much more likely to be done by others who assume that because it is a laptop, it'll have a battery :S
