It was also confirmed by a tweet from a Verge editor. Basically it came directly from the NPD report.

Check the comments tho. There are some claiming it's bullshit and that guy's source was actually gaf. The Verge editor just confirmed MS's victory, not the 1.2 million. I have no doubt myself the leaks are accurate but MS really needs to release some PR claiming the 1.2 million achievement to clear up any lingering doubt.
