Why? which side of the debate are you on? I own a WiiU the gamepad doesn't add anything, the battery is a joke and the WiiU's controller pro is far supperior.
None of the games so far have even come close to making good use of the gamepad. A game like Rayman Legends design entirely around the gamepad got redesign to work without game pad. Using the gamepad and looking at the TV at the same time doesn't work. It's gimmicky. My WiiU is in my living room like almost every one else. It's connected to my 60" inch TV with a Vizio 52" inch soundbar system, to give a console experience .... why the hell would it add value to play on the gamepad. Turns out parent and kids don't think so either only 8 million sold worldwide in two years.
Nintendo WiiU's is a failure even in Nintendo books not just looking from the outside. Nintendo needs to please investors and investors are not happy. WiiU is not making them any money. I paid $350 for my WiiU and got it at launch, I was there when WiiU had full 3rd party support and played Call of duty on the WiiU, Activision made a amazing launch game in ZombiU (ZombiU 2 was apparently in the works and would of been even better) and I was eagerly waiting for RAyman legends to release on Feb 24, 2013 .... I pre-ordered this game and the this game was the main reason I was sold on the WiiU. Fast forward two years, WiiU is a failure and I want nothing else then for Nintendo to do something about it. Dropping the gamepad would solve all of the problem. I own over 30 WiiU games and the gamepad is a useless piece of plastic. Sure I enjoyed it in NintendoLand and Game and Wario but I stop playing these game years ago. The only gamepad intergration on MArio KArt 8 was a horn. A HORN.
You know what happen when something doesn't make money and investors are not happy??? We're looking either option #1 change or option #2 move on to the next thing and cut your lose.
