I don't know why people act like Smash Bros is so much bigger than 3D Mario, Sunshine & Melee sold very similar and Galaxy & Brawl sold very similar.

People were on about how Smash Bros. was gonna increase sales by a lot (respectively speaking about Wii U hardware sales). With the month of Super Mario 3D World launch, the game sold 215K vs. the 710K Smash Bros. sales, one would have expected more hardware moving (I was guilty of thinking that as well). Only a 10% increase shows that Smash Bros. just isn't as big of a console mover as many expected it to be. I think I should have added that with Mario Kart 8 released already, + the Launch of Smash Bros., Wii U only moving 240K-ish during November is a huge disaster. But of course, games like Mario Kart 8 will have an insane attach rate.

Well the big difference in opening month software sales could be entirely do to install base at the time of release. According to Vgchartz, the week before 3D World released Wii U was at 1.5m in the US. The week before Smash Bros released, Wii U sales were at 3m in the US. So hardware sales increased by 1.5m in that time frame which explains the extra 500k or so software numbers for Smash Bros launch month.
