Thats only increasing the userbase though,a userbase thats never going to cross 3.5mil in japan. Remember that^.
Also 3ds version was done before WiiU, and there are many other factors aswell in it :0

I don't need to remember anything. They need more Wii U sales globally. Putting a cut back version of 3DS has hampered the sales potential of the Wii U version. This is nothing but shooting themselves in the foot with regards to increasing their Wii U standing. They could very easily have released their portable version of the game next year and enjoyed the same sales overall, however with a bigger impact on their home console.

Smash Bros wouldn't have done a whole lot more for Wii U even if there was no 3DS version. People need to accept that no matter what, Wii U is going to be Nintendo's worst selling home console and if Nintendo's other big hitting franchises ( 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Pikmin, Donkey Kong) couldn't stop that then Smash Bros was extremely unlikely to do so either.
