Nintendo have stated several times that Windwaker was an experiment to allow a huge open world, but due to the hardware and other constraints, the compromise became the islands. So basically, it is a long, more or less empty, corridor (the ocean) with a number of decorated rooms (islands). It was not as good as they had hoped, and it is not the way they wanted it to be.

The Wii U is strong enough to allow for a vast, POPULATED world. They will not make a large empty world again.
(Well, at least that is what they've said. :) They know about this and they've talked about it a lot. Don't worry so much over a beta build that is most likely quite old, for a game that still has a long time to go.)

So basically, it's not that at all. Corridors are linear. The ocean was not. A corrider has two directions. The ocean had infinite. And again, it wasn't "more or less" empty. There was still a ton to do in the ocean. It was populated. The islands were not a compromise, they were a solution. It's well known that Wind Waker is Aonuma's favorite project. For what the set out to do, they were satisfied with how WW came out. The only regrets Aonuma had were fixed in the remake, none of which was lack of things to do in the ocean. Faster sail, shorter triforce quest.

Perhaps I worded that poorly. Its not a corridor, it is just vast, empty and boring. Much like a corridor, it acted as a way to take you between the different rooms, the places that were actually important.

Infinite directions to more emptiness... That's not positive. There wasn't a "ton to do in the ocean", far from it.

I love WW. I can accept a large empty ocean. I set out very early to get every single map square and visit all the islands. I finished (almost..) all of the figurines.

Does not excuse the ocean for being empty, flat and boring. It worked though, it served its purpose. But it is what it is.

Satisfied? They took it as far as they could. They accomplished a lot, nothing wrong with that. But they wanted so much more.
*enter Zelda WiiU*
I have great hopes for this game, and I'm prepearing myself to get blown off my feet. From what they've said and what they've shown, I find no reason to believe Zelda WiiU will become a WW on land.
