Actually, I'd expect Nintendo fans to already own the console. There's been a fair few incentives to jump into the console up until this point, and plenty of promises for the future too.
Given that Smash is a fanservice game, I'd expect it to have strong first week sales and less tail than something like Mario Kart, though still with some decent legs. The fact it opened a good 100k below MK8, to me, isn't a particularly stunning performance.
The saving grace is the holidays in that people may well be holding off. So we'll have to see how that pans out. But there's "low" U software sales and "low, even with lowered expectations", and this one is the latter.
