It does make me smile to see some folks who try to shoehorn the Galaxy games into the 64/Sunshine style to try and somehow discredit 3D World.
Super Mario 64 opted for a more open world, playground style level design. And Sunshine was even more open in that regard.
Galaxy 1 and 2 were designed to be more linear, obstical course styled level design... and those elements were more focused in 3D World.
Obviously there's elements of both designs in the others games (Fluddless obstical courses in Sunshine, more open worlds in Galaxy/3D World), but to me, 3D World comes from the same school of thought as Galaxy 1 & 2.
