That's just better draw distance from more powerful hardware and a different elevation. That has nothing to do with how close they are to each other. You can be on one side of a reletively small (real life) lake and not be able to see what's on the other side, but be able to see for miles further if you're elevated. Link is in this. Most of the scenery is either down hill or above the horizon line.
