On what console?? The Wii "not even Pokemon could sell me" U, or the Nintendo "insert stupid name here" which will sell even less. The time for a big budget console RPG from Pokemon was the Wii and they passed on it, now the best thing they have (yes Im going here) is a Pokemon MMO and even that may not be successful enough with competition from the handheld games and the slowly shrinking fanbase to move enough home consoles |
Whatever console we're looking at in 2018. To me at least its been very clear Nintendo's past refusal to make a console Pokemon game is tied to their desire to protect their handheld space. Its nothing to do with how much the game would sell (it would always sell upwards of 3m on an active userbase), pokemon is an asset to whatever console its on and they don't want to take that selling point from their handhelds. Infact the more successful a Nintendo console/the more confident Ninty are, the less likely we are to see a pokemon RPG.
My hunch that we'll finally get one is based on the idea that they will once again try and compete directly with Sony and MS next generation (the blue ocean strategy is unreliable), which means far more desperation from their end, last time this happened we saw pokemon colleseum but this time I think they'll go further.... I think the handheld space and console will be alot closer aligned then they have been in the past. The console market huge if you can penetrate it, meanwhile Nintendo have done everything they can with the 3DS and it probably won't reach PSP sales, next handheld system will do even worse. Moving forward they're going to balance their baskets more IMO.
