Man what a huge drop from the SNES to the N64, but since all the JRPGs had moved to the PS1 back then...not really surprising

If u look at the best seller list for SNES in Japan, u will see that out of the top 30 games, 12 were RPGs by Square/Enix and 4 were fighters.

Playstation and to a lesser extent Sega Saturn pretty much completely stole fans of those genres from Nintendo. Square/Enix were not making Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest exclusively for Playstation and had a big fighting series in Tekken while Saturn had a bunch of smaller RPGs and had a big fighting game in Virtual Fighter.

N64 is when Nintendo consoles became devices pretty much for the sole purpose of 1st party titles.
