Stealing this from someone on GAF but if a Toukiden expansion pack can sell slightly less than Phantasy Star Nova on Vita, I'd say the problem was with the game rather than the choice of platform.
It's done terribly by all metrics, but they made some seriously bad choices with it. The only benefit to being on 3DS would be that it doesn't have Phantasy Star Online 2 to compete against.

Weren't you predicting explosive sales this week? It's not going to have legs. It's a hunting game from an established franchise and the user reviews are poor. The only legs it may have are from being a holiday title, but I doubt it.

You might want to check that again. Unless you're talking about the USA only, in which case, the circumstances surrounding Symphonia's release aren't going to be recreated again.
But it's a pretty pointless discussion, because Baba has already said he's not shopping the series around a load of platforms again this generation. And given the anaemic state of WiiU over there, it's going to be PS4 or nowhere if it doesn't take off properly in Japan.
