1) Thirdy party support. People want GTA, Far Cry, CoD, etc. And the kind of mature games that Sony and MS work with are highly markeatable. You see SM3DW and its ads have Mario dresses as a cute cat. You see CoD ads and it looks like a big blockbuster movie. It's like My Little Pony vs The Avengers movie. Nintendo market is oriented towards kids, but console gamer's average age is around 30. That means the dad will buy the console HE wants and just buy some games to his son. The choice? Get a PS4 or X1 with GTA, Far Cry, CoD, Lego and Skylanders. So why does 3DS sells? A handheld is a personal choice, only one person will use. So it's the kid that will choose it, as long as it is cheap (and it is). So we got the home console, one per holsehold, that the dad/older brother will choose and the handheld, that the kid can choose.
You have to be markeatable. You have to look "cool". That's something the PS4 masters and the X1 is decently good at. The Wii U is terrible in that. Right now, it's everyone against Nintendo. 3rd parties do heavy advertisement for their games and that's indirectly advertisement for PS$ and X1. If your X1 friend tells you that Far Cry is awesome, you go and buy it on your PS4. The only cases where this won't happen is with exclusives, but they are the minority.
Nintendo has a problem with their image. MS and Sony created a image of high tech, power, cool games, explosions, shooting... If you pay attention, is the same thing that is used in the blockbuster movies packed with special effects (in consoles, that would be the graphics). Nintendo has the image of family friendly, kiddie company. Someone can quote this and say "but how about Bayo, how about Devil's Third", but the final image of the company is that. And they don't seem much worried about changing it. They do a shooter and it actually is about shooting colorful painting with cute characters. This isn't markeatable outside of Japan. They look to be stuck in the Japanese "kawaii" culture that doesn't work in the west.
But first of all, Nintendo must get a reality check and really face it as an issue. They lost share, they need to check what's going on. But their current corporate culture doesn't look to see things this way.
2) This gen they can't do nothing. The Wii U has so much hardware issues. They should go to 3rd parties and start developing their next console with them, to rebuild these relationship. They will end up building a machine on par with PS5/next XBox.
