I still have my original black model. I usually don't buy hardware early in the life-cycle, but I made an exception based on the announced games (Fire Emblem, Zelda, and Tales), and was satisfied by that. The XL looked way too big for me, and I never had any interest in the 2DS model.
Mine still works great, minus a few bugs. The L-button doesn't work properly unless I blow on it, which is annoying, but fortunately the only games I own that require it are compatible with the Circle Pad Pro. There's also some smudges on the screen from the raised lower screen, though that's pretty minor. Seeing as how I've had it for 3 years and I've gotten more use out of it than my Wii/U/PS3, I have a buttload of digital content on it, so if I were to upgrade to a newer model, I'd need a way to transfer everything over. If there isn't an option for that, I'll likely just wait for the official successor to the 3DS. I lasted the whole 7th gen on my DS Phat, I don't see an issue with keeping the original 3DS for this entire gen.
