I always thought lightsabers in general as cool as they are are horribly impratical. The "blade" I would assume has no weight and any simple mistake and you would instantly burn yourself, but I guess they're Jedi/Sith so whatever. The guard seems silly though because you're just adding more to potentially hurt yourself.

The Sith clearly turned it on separately from the main blade, so I'm not too miffed. If the guard ever got in the way, it can be turned it back off. It doesn't look anywhere near as impressive as the designer obviously thought it would--a cruciform lightsaber just looks silly--but it's not terrible, either.
