I always thought lightsabers in general as cool as they are are horribly impratical. The "blade" I would assume has no weight and any simple mistake and you would instantly burn yourself, but I guess they're Jedi/Sith so whatever. The guard seems silly though because you're just adding more to potentially hurt yourself.

looks a bit like a traditional german longsword, but as you said the laser parts make it really impractical to use

in historical european martial arts there are soo many moves that involve grabbing your or the opponents blade/guard which are all impossible here
