They were up three possessions with less than two minutes to go. A field goal doesn't change anything, so you go for it. If you make the first down it's game over. If you don't they have to march the field 85 yards and have two onside kick recoveries. It's really just basic strategy to end the game.

Riiiight, I guess concussing the holder, inside the 20, giving the opposing team another TD is strategy too :D
