I don't think Wii U will pass 9M by the years end. If anything, it'll get to 8-8.5M. Smash is the season's biggest Wii U game and I don't think it'll push many more Wii U units than it's doing now.

Are people purposefully underestimating WiiU in this thread?

It doesn't need to do extraodinary numbers to reach 10m.

I don't see how anything less 9.5m is possible, otherwise it's flat yoy from this point on ....

No, not at all. I just think that even with the success of smash, I can't help but think that most preceeding owners of Wii U had intentions of buying smash. The thing is at 7.6 now according to VGchartz. I expect smash to push Wii U sales to around 100,000-150,000 at the most for the opening weeks. With Europe and Japan getting the game, I see them doing a solid 100k and 50k respectively and these are just block numbers, for their opening weeks.

Smash is big but the Wii inflated sales of many of Nintendo's games so it is hard to have extremely high hopes for the sales of the game, but we're talking about sales of consoles here so considering that the Wii was mostly casual ridden, most of the causals who bought brawl probably didn't get a Wii U and have moved on to the PS4 or mobile, I dunno. I'd love to be prooved wrong, love it. But Nintendo doesn't have its reigns on the market like the did in 06. With that being said, they have a potentially strong holiday coming up and anything can happen.
