I'm expecting Wii U to sell better than it did last Xmas, but I'm not sure by how much. On the one hand, it's got pretty much the only exclusive game released in the Xmas period this year to get consistently positive buzz and reviews and it's been looking really good compared to the ton of other high-profile games that have either had major online problems or bugs or just a general sense of meh-ness. It's also not going to have its thunder stolen by a console launch this time.
On the other hand, Mario Kart was always what I saw as being the true system-seller of Nintendo consoles (along with a few lightning-in-a-bottle games like Wii Sports or Brain Training). Granted, it didn't launch in a Xmas period but I'm not sure Smash has more selling power than it either way. Though I guess that was back at a time when everyone was expecting Watch Dogs and Destiny and Driveclub and Unity to be amazing...
