"In Your Eyes" and "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel are great songs from 1986.  Sledgehammer also has one of the best music videos from the 80s.  Plus there are a lot of other pretty good songs that year like "Livin' On A Prayer" and "The Final Countdown" for example.

I wouldn't consider "In Your Eyes" and "Sledgehammer" to be cheese fest songs.  As a matter of fact I wouldn't consider anything Peter Gabriel did as a solo artits in the cheese fest song category, plus he left Genesis long before they ever had a song that would fit in that category.
