Key difference: Pokemon costs a hell lot to market, and has a merch empire to support. Captain Toad is neither of those. |
And yet, Captain Toad had plenty of TV marketing in Japan (albeit closer to release date than it probably should've been).
If we're poking key differences then the fact that Pokemon sells in the 10s of millions should be one. But the point was - low budget =/= selling low is a success. If it's what the publisher expected (i.e. Compile Heart) then it can be a success. If it's not what the publisher expects (i.e. any bigger publisher) then it's not as clear cut. Given the sellthrough we've had in Famitsu, I don't think anyone can proclaim "Captain Toad had a low budget so it's a success even with low numbers!" unless they're using it as damage control.
Wait a while and see what the legs are. I expect they'll be good, but this week's sales are far from encouraging.
