PS3 was in much worse shape.  5M behind (if not more?) console was 200 more, terrible PR, etc...   Hell, you can make a case that Naughty Dog saved Sony.  And of course a ton of people (like me) bought it for the BD player.

Sony's first year of the PS3 outsold the XBox 360. They were outselling their last years and thats how they caught up. Even at $600 they were taking narrow bites at Microsofts lead. By the time they dropped the price in 2008 and added MGS4 into the mix that was when the major shift happened. Naughty Dog is Sony. They've been Sony since the end of the PS2 era. They don't resemble the PS2 and PS1 Naughty Dog at all. Sony reformed the company and set it on the warpath. I wish MS could say they did that for Rare, but they cannot. MS cannot beat Sony with an even launch, again...its why Microsoft risked the integrity of the 360 to beat Sony for the years head start and look up any article that speaks on Microsofts motivations for the year head start. MS knew the Xbox wasn't complete.

MS can only pose a threat to Sony through desperate acts.

1. Mad dash to get the Xbox 360 to market causing one of the biggest failure rates in the history of not only videogames, but consumer electronics.

2. Was caught off guard by Sony announcing the launch of the PS4 and went into a mad dash to fix their clock speed. Luckily for all of us MS was mostly complete with the console, but certain online features were not finished. Of course thats where MS always beats Sony though.
