I actually prefer 90's music to 80's music overall. That being said...This is the list from 1984 according to the website Chris listed...

10 Shout Tears for Fears
9 Pride (In the Name of Love) U2
8 Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go Wham!
7 We're Not Gonna Take It Twisted Sister
6 Let's Go Crazy Prince & The Revolution
5 People Are People Depeche Mode
4 Take on Me A-Ha
3 You Spin Me 'Round (Like a Record) Dead or Alive
2 When Doves Cry Prince
1 How Soon is Now? Smiths

And this is based off the Billboard top 100 biggest song of 1984...
10 "Somebody's Watching Me" Rockwell
9 "What's Love Got to Do with It" Tina Turner
8 "Sunglasses at Night" Corey Hart
7 "99 Luftballons" Nena
6 "The Reflex" Duran Duran
5 "Time After Time" Cyndi Lauper
4 "Drive" The Cars
3 "Thriller" Michael Jackson
2 "Eyes Without a Face" Billy Idol
1 "When Doves Cry" Prince

1984 was a great year for music I think I have to agree with Slant Magazine which listed Purple Rain as the second best album from the 1980s behind Thriller.  Rolling Stones Magazine has it also listed at number 2 they have London Calling by The Clash as number one even though it is really a 70s album since it was first released in the UK on December 14th, 1979.
