I think if we learned anything with League of Legends is that characters can be a very popular commodity. Killer Instinct (2013) also follows a similar formula i believe.
And First Smash DLC is Mewtwo =P
Amiibos could work as a way of unlocking too, as they do with the spinner in Hyrule Warriors. This way Nintendo could sell a new character for $12 (instead of KI $5), and since Amiibo utility is not restricted to only this, it could work.
