46. Wolfenstein: The New Order
I have a weird love/hate relationship with modern ID franchise games. I thought Doom 3 was over-rated with an over-reliance on cheap scares and tactics to mask the lazy design, I didn't get on with any of the Quake games after Arena, and although I loved the gameplay/gunplay in Rage, there wasn't any depth to keep me interested in the long-term.
Wolfenstein 3D helped create the FPS genre, Return to Castle Wolfenstein wasn't bad, but the follow up in 2009 was horrible. So I didn't have any expectations with this new Wolfenstein game. I was pleasantly surprised as MachineGames first ever title proved to be hugely entertaining campaign with the fantastic combat of Rage, but added some quality stealth mechanics, an engaging alternative-history story and intelligent level design. Overall, this is the best way to pay homage to the original Wolfenstein 3D.
