IMO they will never recoup their investment in Minecraft.

Minecraft is still very popular. Not just game and DLC, but it also moves a lot of merchandise. A sequel could potentially move a lot of units as well.

Mojang makes profit of $110 Million per year (including Minecraft and merchandise).  It's a 43 person company, and the original talent is gone.  Mojang have been unsuccessful at creating new successful franchieses, and there is no guarantee of future success.

Even assuming they continue to keep their success, Mojang's income represents a ROI of only 4.4% .  That's a weak return for a tech company like Microsoft, and is devaluing Microsoft's overall ROE of 24.9%.

Minecraft is not a bad brand to own, they just paid way too much for it.
