Whenever I see something I want, I research for the game online and compare scores between publications. I try not to use Metacritic's score as a ultimate decider. Now, if it's a game I've been expecting for months and months, I buy it day 1. Unfortunately, games like that usually have some kind of review embargo, and developers have found a good way for gamers not to detract from their purchase. If a game already is from a good developer, like Naughty Dog, for example, or it's a highly acclaimed series like GTA, then I'll buy it, but not mindlessly, since I know these will deliver.
