Nobody in the business of reviewing or who makes it their business to read reviews believes a 5 is average. That's just lip service. The scale tipped long, long ago.  7/10 or 70%  is the score you give an average game and it's been that way since the late 1990's. Thanks to sites like metacritic that value is actually rising as well. With so many sites overrating games, 80% is slowly becoming the new 70%, which is the real 50%.

I figured it was like the American public school grading system, where 70-80 percent is very much average, and 50 percent is downright trash.
