No idea why people still say that. Just because 50 is in the middle of a 0-100 scale doesn't mean that a 50 is "average". 50 is considered as a bad game by most magazines. You may be right for movies but not for games.
IGN has after over 12k reviews an average score of 69 and they gave 4 points less as the average score for the same games was on Meta so that the average score for games seems to be at around 73. It also doesn't mean that most games are simply much better as "average", you just have to read reviews which have a score of 50 to know that this isn't considered an average game.
