The part of the planet that is facing the black hole at any given time is being pulled towards the black hole. The part pulled up is essentially water in the shape of a giant wave. The wave seems like it is traveling around the planet. But essentially, it is the surface of the planet moving UNDERNEATH the wave as the planet is spinning. also there are many types of planets they even found an ice planet but no ordinary its actually burning ice like in a Zelda game interstellar is closest to the real thing as we ever got to see in movies kip thorne is also the producer and he made sure everything made sense from a scientific perspective.

I get the idea behind it, yet such a tide would slow down and stop the planets rotation over time. Even the weak moon's gravity has slowed down the earth significantly over time. Plus if the wave was that high from gravitational attraction, why are they falling off it in the lander... The whole planet would be deformed anyway and getting constantly torn up inside by gavitational friction. Unless it was some alien super sphere constructed from unknown strong materials with water dumped on it as a reservoir. Just as plausible at this point :)
Then there's the little issue of 1 hour = 7 years. That's quite a massive gravity well to climb out of I would think. The difference between on earth and off earth is 0.0219 seconds less per year. I can't imagine what you would need to escape the gravitational pull that makes a year last 8.5 minutes. It probably would make that huge tide on that indestructable marble :p
Gonna watch that video now. Interstellar one should be fun too. Docking with a spinning space station out of balance, basically a giant wobbly wheel. Then applying thrust outside the center of mass to escape orbit. It would just start the station spinning again. Same thing later when one lander runs out of fuel before the other. The last hour seemed more plausible than all that. It was great to watch anyway and nice they paid homage to all the scientific principles before running all over them.

but yeah probably the wave was too high indeed but movies you know eye candy, drama etc..
