Skylanders and Amiibo are very different. The initial sky landers was designed for kids under the age of 12, smash is not that casual a game, nor are the characters all that befitting to a 10 years olds imagination of cool (monsters or their favourite characters- disney infinity). The toys also play a far more essential role in Skylanders whereby they unlock characters (essentially DLC). Amiibo are far more trivial, only being used for some strange metagame that most people probably won't even play.
