The reason most people swear by the GC controller for Smash Bros is not because it's superior in any way (it isn't) but because that's what they spent so many hours using on Melee so that's what they're used to. It having a wire is fairly important to the competitive people as well. I personally preferred to use the classic controller for Brawl.
