The easiest answer is to setup up a program at Sony/Microsoft stores where you bring it in and they shred it on the spot and issue you the code. No real cost besides some time. That also gives them a chance to bump you into more product while in the store.
I know there aren't many M$ or Sony stores, so they could also work a deal with Target or Bestbuy or something to offer the same thing.
It is near the end of the end....
