Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, the game is just phenomenal. It's from the makers of Fallout 1&2.
Another classic is Septerra Core, a western game with a heavy Japanese influence. Both are old VGA PC games, but still hold up today.
For something more recent, try Resonance of Fate. And Solatorobo on DS (warning, it's quite furry). There's also a cool steampunk platformer on sale on PSN right now (first time I've seen it on sale) called Rocket Knight.
