The public opinion has let me down before, so I can definitely see this happen.


I don't consider it likely though. Super Smash Bros. Melee managed to sell extremely well on a poorly selling console because of its top-notch gameplay, which is the reason why the game is still growing on Twitch.tv and the number of tournament participants is still growing worldwide. Same can't be said about Brawl, which is now practically gone from the competitive scene. And we all (who have done some basic research on gameplay mechanics) know that Smash 4 is more similar to Brawl than anything else.

Even if Wii U sells 40-50 million units lifetime, I still wouldn't find it more likely than Melee remaining on top. Brawl sold more because of Wii's massive success. Wii U won't give Smash 4 the same advantage.
