Actually Sega had Nintendo on the ropes for a few years before the SNES ultimately pulled ahead and won.

No it really didn't lol. The genesis was released in 1989. The only reason it had Nintendo "on the ropes" or more accurately had a large market share for that generation because the geneses had no competition for years. SNES wasn't released until 1991 in the US and 1992 in the remaining large markets. When it was released it outsold the genesis at every turn. Especially in the US. Then Sega decided to focus on add ons like the sega cd then they basically just gave up after pulling themselves in too many different directions.  Despite their clever commercials sega never beat snes or really negatively affected their sales. Granted I was a teenager at the time but I remember it clearly. There was no real "console war" at the time, at least nothing like what we see now. Snes dominated out of the gate, sega did well for itself but shot itself in the foot, stretched itself too thin then just quietly went away.
