For Legend of Zelda, could very well happen too, lol. I mean while there has been a LOT of praise for the reveal, but there has also been a lot of "Link looks like a girl" as well. I think the reveiw scores are going to have people change their mind though and at the end of it's life cycle sell around 4.5-5.5 mil copies. Landing it smack middle sales wise in the franchise. I think it will review VERY well, getting >95.
While I will also agree with you that jrpgs are a niche, but I can see it selling better than operation rain falls RPGs simply due to the fact there is no limited supply of the game. Also, I didn't see ANY marketing push from Nintendo, which could also impact sales.
