Putting it another way, how could you, in the early 90s, do an honest interpretation of Mario?
I like that concept that the films tell the true story and that the games are a child friendly retelling, adjusted to allow for gameplay. That allows for a smart film.
Just a pity that a smart film isn't what came out in the end.
