I just played a bunch of online. It's awesome. I got a battle mode match with all 12 racers, 10 in Japan, me in California, and this dude Bojangles in Germany. It was rad.
Any time somebody drops off, it doesn't make you start over. Each match will go from 6 - 12 racers as people join and drop out, with no stopping and restarting between matches. It's super smooth.
The new battle mode stages kick ass. Battle mode automatically picks teams and splits you down the middle at random. There's balloon mode and coin mode.
You vote on stages and you can pick "random."
Some of the new stages are amazing, in that Waluigi Pinball way. DK's new level owns balls.
