Speaking about next gen (in the OP), Giants certainly was exactly that when it released in 2000, as much as a PC game can be next gen at least.

It was great fun but I remember it had balance issues. The Reaper was way overpowered with extreme range homing attacks and the Giant was useless without its spawn, the Meccaryn could keep their distance with helicopters and other measures.

Real LAN hit back in the day!
